KDDI and Okinawa Cellular have announced that Video Pass, a video service that allows users to enjoy a wide range of movies anytime and anywhere, is to be launched on May 15, 2012.
Video Pass users who subscribe to the Unlimited Viewing Plan, which is available for a monthly fee of 590 yen (tax included), can watch one new movie release per month and view an unlimited amount of other titles from a wide range of genres, including Japanese and foreign movies, drama, anime, music, Korean popular entertainment, variety shows, and original releases. Also available is a service plan that allows users to view new movies and other popular titles individually. In addition, customers interested in trying Video Pass can download the Video Pass application, which provides selected content, such as the opening episodes of anime and drama series, free of charge [1].
In addition to viewing Video Pass content on smartphones, users can also connect an HDMI cable from their smartphone to a TV [2], or they can use their au ID to enjoy content on other devices such as personal computers or tablets [3], for no additional charge. In the future, Video Pass content will also be viewable using Android-based next-generation set-top boxes (STB), which are now under development by KDDI.
Any au Smart Pass member who registers for Video Pass will be offered a free two-week trial period for the Unlimited Viewing Plan [4], and users who do not subscribe to the Unlimited Viewing Plan can still view a selection of popular releases each month.
