The rate cut is aimed to respond to customer demand, and to eliminate or minimize the rate difference between incoming and outgoing international calls and to boost its international competitiveness in light of the increasing global competition for the international telephone market. It will be the greatest for calls to Asia and South America, destinations where there is strong and quickly growing demand for international telephone calls. To prepare for changes in the competitive environment including the deregulation of ISR (International Simple Resale) and foreign companies' entry into the market, KDD will lower rates not only to industrialized countries in Europe and America that are now functioning as international telephone hubs, but also to other regions to which traffic are diverted by way of such hubs.
The rate cut will total some 9.3 billion yen (based on fiscal year 1996 figures) and average 5.1%. The maximum rate reduction will be 20.2%.
Destinations subject to reduced rates are all IDD destinations (224 countries and regions). The rate cut will be most substantial to Asia including Korea (Rep. Of) and China, to South America including Brazil and Peru, and to Africa.
The rate cut will range from 20 yen to 250 yen for a three-minute call placed during the day on a weekday. For example, a call to Korea (Rep. Of) will be reduced from 610 yen to 560 yen ; to Brazil from 1,200 yen to 980 yen, to China from 680 yento 630 yen, and to the United States from 480 yen to 450 yen.

- Route KDD
- VIRNET
