ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) enables very high speed communications by transmitting information in units of fixed length cells. As a technology supporting the information superhighway in the next generation, ATM is expected to play a central role in moving image transmission, large-capacity LAN-to-LAN and so forth.
For this service, KDD will establish a direct circuit (subscriber circuit, chosen from three types, 1.5 Mbps, 6 Mbps, and 45 Mbps by the customer) between the customer and KDD's point of presence. The customer will choose, within the limit of the speed of the subscriber circuit, a logical link* comprising send and receive channels with each of the multiple destinations at any speed ranging from 16 kbps to 35 Mbps. The service will be provided in two different types: the CBR (Constant Bit Rate) and VBR (Variable Bit Rate).
With CBR, customers can specify a transmission speed for each logical link, and KDD guarantees the specified speed as it does with leased circuits. With VBR, while an average usage speed is preset for each logical link, customers can use, as is the case with the International Frame Relay Service, any link up to the speed of the subscriber circuit when the communication network is not congested.
At the outset, KDD will set up its points of presence for the service in three locations; Shinjuku, Ohtemachi, and Yokohama. The company will initially offer the service with the United States, then gradually expand the service area.
KDD plans to start "KDD Grobalink ATM" as a test service, then launch the service on a full scale, upon demand surveys and verifications of the network control.
* logical link: a logical communication link established between specified users within an ATM network, according to address information contained in the header of a cell.
