Foundation of Japan Internet Exchange Co., Ltd. (JPIX)
News ReleaseJune 23, 1997

Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co., Ltd., AT&T Jens Corporation, Sony System Design Corporation, TOKYO INTERNET Corporation, NEC Corporation, FUJITSU LIMITED, Nihon Cisco Systems K.K., and Internet Research Institute, Inc. have agreed to establish a new company, Japan Internet Exchange Co., Ltd. (JPIX). The new company will provide Internet service providers (ISP) with an Internet exchange service to overcome the surge in Internet traffic.

Sixteen investors, including the eight companies above, plan to establish JPIX in mid-July.

For efficient development of the Internet and maintenance of its transmission quality, the IX (Internet exchange) that interconnects many ISPs and academic networks forming the Internet fulfills its extremely important functions. In Japan today, however, there are only two major IXs that are in full operation on the Internet: NSPIXP1* (in Iwanami Building, Kanda, Tokyo) and NSPIXP2 (in KDD Otemachi Building). Both are basically academic IXs operated by the WIDE project for experimental purposes.

The companies have agreed to found JPIX in an attempt to secure a highly reliable Internet exchange environment that positively meets the soaring Internet traffic. Their decision to establish the company, which will manage an IX for handling commercial traffic on the Internet, is also based on their wish to foster the stable and efficient development of the Internet network and Internet business in Japan.

The first JPIX's switch will be installed in KDD Otemachi Building. Later, the facility will be expanded to KDD Building in Shinjuku to distribute the risk and the load on IX functions.

The new company will cater to ISPs including investors and contents providers. With the aim of establishing itself as the IX to be the hub for the Internet in Asia, JPIX will also urge Asian nations and American ISPs to use its IX service.

JPIX will cooperate with the WIDE project to pursue an ideal Internet exchange environment in Japan, and contribute to the development of the Internet in Japan as one of the cores of the Internet infrastructure.

The new company is slated to begin service in October this year.
