KDD to Sign a Memorandum on Asia Pacific Internet Community |
1997-026 | October 2, 1997 |
APIC members will create a high-quality Internet backbone network building upon the high-speed direct bilateral links between the members in a mesh formation, and APIC members will continue to expand the capacity of each direct links which are already established.
As Internet traffic will be carried between any two APIC members directly, the network will enable high-quality Internet communications with extremely high throughput.
APIC members are also considering the development of such Internet-related services as intranet/extranet services based on the Internet backbone network. As a facet of this activity, APIC started in September this year an international Internet telephony test.
Until now, much of the Internet's growth has taken place in the United States. Part of Internet traffic which is originated from and destined to the Asia Pacific countries is still routed through the U.S. The rapid growth of Internet traffic in Asia Pacific region has created the need to build an efficient, high-quality network in this region to lessen reliance on links to the U.S.
Over the years, KDD has contributed to the development of Internet business in this region. For example, the company has expanded its network to Asian carriers for InternetKDD, an Internet gateway service. The establishment of APIC will complement and enhance such efforts.
KDD will continue to consider ways to develop Internet business in Asia with Asian carriers including KT (Korea) and CHT (Taiwan). KDD will collaborate with them in contributing to the development of the Internet in Asia.
