KDD and Teleway to integrate multimedia-related services |
[Press Release] | November 16, 1998
Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co., Ltd. |
Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co., Ltd. (KDD) and Teleway Corporation (Teleway), with the planned merger on December 1 this year, will integrate their Internet, Frame Relay and Cell Relay services respectively to be provided under the new labels with partial revisions of their terms and conditions.
The companies today filed with the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications applications for approval, subject to which the service integration and the new terms and conditions will be put into effect from December 1.
The new services after the integration are summarized as follows:
1. "KDD FR/CR Service" - a new Frame Relay/Cell Relay service
KDD's Frame Relay service "KDD FrameLink" and international ATM service "KDD GlobaLink ATM" will be integrated with Teleway's Frame Relay service "TWINS FR" and Cell Relay service "TWINS CR" to make a new consolidated service "KDD FR/CR Service."
This will enable customers of KDD FR/CR Service to use domestic and international Frame Relay and Cell Relay services interchangeably through the single access facilities.
KDD FR/CR Service, in which customers are to be tied to KDD Corporation with the access facilities, establishes logical links(Note 1) between the customers and their domestic and/or overseas counterparts via the Frame Relay or the Cell Relay with speeds from 0kbps(Note 2) to 135Mbps, giving overall satisfaction to customer needs for data transmission from low speed to high speed.
Also, for the first time in Japan as a consolidated domestic and international service, it is characterized by a simple rate structure, i.e., uniform rates in each of domestic and international services without any differentiation by distance or destination, benefiting customers with some average 20% savings on their actual usage.
Note 1: | A logical link is a logical communication path established between a certain pair of users within the network by header information contained in a frame or a cell. Logical links in the Cell Relay come in two types of services: "Constant Bit Rate (CBR)" which guarantees a certain speed anytime and "Variable Bit Rate (VBR)" which provides an average speed available. |
Note 2: | A logical link with 0kbps has no guaranteed speed. |
2. "NEWEB" - a new Internet service
KDD's Internet gateway service "Internet KDD" and TelewayÕs Internet access service "Teleway Sirius" will be integrated to form a new Internet service "NEWEB."
This will enable KDD Corporation to satisfy varied and detailed customer needs and provide an overall service in the Internet ranging from furnishing backbones for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to Internet access services for individual and business customers.
NEWEB consists of three types of services: "Gateway Service" which is designed to furnish high quality backbones to mainly ISPs, "Access Service" which provides high quality Internet access to individual and business customers connecting through telephone lines or dedicated circuits, and "Server Hosting Service" which houses customersÕ servers at KDD CorporationÕs site and connect them to backbones with LAN cables, facilitating easy dissemination of information.
Customers can choose the most appropriate options among the rich menu of NEWEB in accordance with their usage patterns and frequencies.
Dial-up services, for example, line up from a usage-sensitive option for beginners to a fixed-rate option with unlimited usage for frequent users, to accommodate customersÕ requirements.
Beginning with these "KDD FR/CR Service" and "NEWEB," KDD Corporation, from December 1 on, will undertake to provide various multimedia-related services for customers' total satisfaction.
